Want to Live Longer? Do More Cardio, New Study Suggests

Recent conventional wisdom says strength training holds the key to longevity. Now a new study from the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests aerobic fitness is the secret to a long life. The study analyzed data from 122,000 participants over eight years. Using treadmill tests, researchers found that the people who had the greatest aerobic fitness also lived the longest.

Those over age 70 with the highest degree of aerobic fitness had a nearly 30 percent decrease in mortality risk compared to the next-fittest group. But that doesn’t mean you should ditch weightlifting.

“Strength training is important for mobility and reducing injury with age,” says study author and cardiologist Kyle Mandsager. “It’s not a question of one or the other.”
