Gritty Gyms, Punching Bags, and ‘Moving Tons of Weight’: How Milo Ventimiglia Stays Fit

It’s easy to fall into a rut at the gym, repeating the same few workouts until you forget there’s any other way to train. That’s something  Men’s Journal November cover star Milo Ventimiglia does his best to avoid. His fitness regimen is anything but routine —and it delivers major results . Milo Ventimiglia on His Ultimate Motorcycle Trip and What to Expect From the Next Season of 'This Is Us' Normally he works out with Rise Movement trainer Jason Walsh , and although the workouts change constantly, they all revolve around lifting. “It’s a lot of classic bodybuilding mixed with primitive movement,” Ventimiglia told Men’s Journal during his November cover shoot. Watch Milo Ventimiglia Show Off His Disney Trivia Knowledge Walsh has Ventimiglia zero in on his body’s biomechanics to understand how his body should move with weight. They hit all the major muscle groups and leave him sweating. It’s “as taxing as running a marathon,” Ventimiglia says, even though he’s not doi

How Long You Have to Suffer in an Ice Bath to Reap the Benefits

Slipping into ice baths post-workout is not just an athletic rite of passage. It can actually hasten recovery and get you ready for your next bout, according to research from the American Council on Exercise.     Ten freezing minutes is the magic number to recover from back-to-back workout days, whether you’re running , power biking , or weightlifting . In a six-week study, ice bathers were better able to match their exertion level one day to the next compared with those who just took a nice shower. Some helpful notes: Those who iced for 20 minutes had no better results than those who soaked for 10. And try to take a dip within two hours of your workout. Finally, if you’re struggling to stay in the cold, ice in 10 one-minute increments. Americans Are Traveling Abroad for Medical Care. Here’s How it Could Save You Thousands

Three years ago, Justin Bull was goofing around with friends, swinging on a tree rope, when he lost his grip. The 29-year-old multi-sport athlete and dirt biker plunged 35 feet, landing on his right shoulder and snapping a tendon. Worse yet, he was uninsured, which meant getting surgery in his hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, would cost $40,000, all out-of-pocket.     “I was looking at going into serious debt,” he says. Then Bull’s mother made a surprising suggestion: Go abroad to get it done. A few years before, she’d traveled to the Czech Republic for surgery on her ankle. The procedure had been top-notch, complication-free, and a huge cost-saver. Bull did some research and opted for the Hospitales Amerimed in Cancún, Mexico—an orthopedic-surgery destination for professional athletes worldwide. Bull was hesitant at first, but says ultimately it couldn’t have gone better. “The surgeon was great at communicating,” he says. “We spoke twice before [I went] to Mexico.” When he and

How to Fix Your Internal Clock

We’ve long known that circadian rhythm —the way our body functions line up with day and night—dictates our ideal sleep-wake schedule . Now, scientists are finding that almost every system runs on a 24-hour clock. That makes it possible to dial in on the ideal schedule for things like eating , exercise, and even taking medication. Time it right and it could mean the difference between skating by and working at maximum efficiency. A Diet to Help Get Your Sleep Back on Track “Think of the master clock in your brain as an orchestra conductor and the clocks in the rest of your body as the different sections of that orchestra,” says Courtney Peterson, a researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Experts have long suspected that humans are bound to an internal clock. It is something that they discovered, in part, by looking at the plethora of health issues that befall shift workers, long-haul truckers, and others who work through the night and sleep during the day. For instance

A New Study Finds That Not Exercising Might Be Just as Bad (or Worse) Than Smoking

You know that smoking is bad for you, but what about skipping your workouts? According to a new study from researchers at the Cleveland Clinic, lack of exercise can be just as bad for your health as high blood pressure , high cholesterol , smoking , and other well known health risks. In some cases, CBS News reports , not exercising can be even more deadly than those conditions. Dr. Wael Jaber, the lead author on the study, was surprised by the findings, since traditional risk factors like blood pressure or cholesterol get most of the attention. People Who Listen to Music When They Exercise Have Better Workouts “But we found that the biggest risk is just under our nose: being physically less fit,” he told CBS News.     The study’s comprehensive data set makes these findings even more compelling. Dr. Jaber and his colleagues combed through records of more than 122,000 patients who took exercise treadmill tests at the Cleveland Clinic, dating back to 1991. Then the researchers separ

How to Build Your Emotional Intelligence to Boost Athletic Performance

You’re toeing the line at a 10K . You’ve trained diligently . The conditions are ideal. Your running flats are barely out of the box. You are ready. But there’s one area of race prep you may have overlooked: your emotional intelligence.     Consider it the X factor, a hidden key to peak performance. Sports psychologists consider EI—a concept roughly translating to an awareness of your own mental state—to be game-changing. It’s the special sauce that has compelled professional athletes to take up meditation , which is a key component in honing your emotional wherewithal. Now weekend warriors are realizing that EI can be the different between a plateau and a PR. The Best Mental Strategies to Power Through Pain To prove it, researchers at the University of Padova in Italy recently asked 237 half-marathoners to complete a questionnaire that, unbeknownst to the runners, revealed their EI scores. A postrace comparison revealed EI was a key factor determining finish times, after control

The Best Abs Move for Shoulder Day

Planks are a mainstay because they’re so effective: They tax your core and the smaller stabilizing muscles in your hips and shoulders. That there are so many variations on the move is, in large part, because planks are so tedious. 4 Seriously Underrated Ab Exercises Enter the alligator crawl. It’s unusual in that it’s an active—rather than stationary— plank variation, so there’s no watching the seconds tick by on the wall clock. “This exercise adds work for major shoulder  muscles that regular planks don’t hit,” says Matt Pudvah, the head strength coach of the Sports Performance Institute at the Manchester Athletic Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. “And it teaches your limbs and core to work better together as you fight to stay tense.”     Start in a high plank wearing socks on a slick floor, or with toes on sliders as shown below, and walk hands forward while maintaining a perfectly straight line between head and feet. 5 Things You Should Know About Getting the Flu Shot This Year

Pumpkin spice, sweaters, falling leaves —and the flu. With the change of season comes an increased risk of getting sick, but aside from washing your hands frequently, eating well , and staying hydrated, there’s one other method that will help you avoid the bug this year: getting your flu shot. In fact, it’s your best bet for staying healthy, says Dr. Roger Lovell, M.D., and infectious disease specialist at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center in Georgia. “The flu vaccine remains the best way to prevent flu and its serious complications,” he says. “Even if the flu vaccine doesn’t prevent getting the actual flu infection, it has been shown to decrease the severity of the flu.” 10 Ways to Win the War on Colds and the Flu   If getting a shot for the flu seems overkill, consider this: The CDC reports that last year’s flu season saw the highest number of flu-related hospitalizations the agency has ever recorded. Think Twice Before Buying Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Online: This Man’s Vision Turned Red

If you pop an erectile dysfunction pill , there are a couple of things you expect to happen. Your vision turning permanently red probably isn’t one of them. After a 31-year-old man took liquid sildenafil citrate—the active ingredient in most ED drugs, including Viagra and Cialis—his vision took on a red tint. Two days later he went to the emergency room and doctors diagnosed him with retinal toxicity, confirming the drug had caused actual structural changes to his retina. 11 Foods That Reduce Your Risk of Erectile Dysfunction Interestingly, it’s the active ingredient in ED meds that helps a guy get it up —a compound called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor—that can also impair your vision, says Kaushal M. Kulkarni, M.D., an ophthalmologist in San Diego, CA. The PDE-5 inhibitor traditionally releases nitric oxide in the corpora cavernosa (the tissue of the penis), but it can also have an effect on a similar compound, PDE-6, which is in the photoreceptors of the retina and part
