You Won’t Find Matthew McConaughey in the Gym. Here Are His Favorite Ways to Train Outdoors

From slimming down for his role in Dallas Buyers Club to bulking up and shredding some waves for his upcoming film The Beach Bum, Men’s Journal October cover star Matthew McConaughey definitely knows how to break a sweat (and apparently has quite an arm). But you won’t find him in a gym—indoor workouts are just too tame for this adventurous Oscar winner.

“There’s a lot of ways to be active outdoors,” McConaughey told Men’s Journal during our October cover shoot. “It’s more fun that way.”

His sweat sessions are fun, certainly, but that doesn’t mean he’s not working hard. Many of his favorite workouts take place on the water. Recently, he’s been paddling around Lake Austin in Texas, which makes for great core exercise, and he mixes in swimming as well. When he’s not out for a dip, he’ll lace up his shoes and head out for a run—and throw in an upper body workout while he’s at it.

“At the halfway point I’ll drop down and [do] intermittent crunches and pushups, and then run the second half,” he says.
